Text – A World of International Organizations

Every day, many international organizations work quietly to improve people’s lives around the world. Some of them focus on health, others on education, human rights or economic development. Although these organizations are very different, they often cooperate to solve global problems.

The United Nations (UN) was created after the Second World War to maintain peace and security. It encourages dialogue between countries and tries to prevent wars and conflicts. Many UN agencies have special missions. For example, the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) provides food, vaccines and education for children in poor and developing countries. The World Health Organization (WHO) works to fight diseases and to improve public health.

Other organizations are not part of the UN family but also play an important role. Amnesty International (AI) defends prisoners of conscience and campaigns against torture and the death penalty. Doctors Without Frontiers (DWF) sends medical teams to help victims of wars, epidemics and natural disasters. The Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) works to reduce hunger and to support farmers.

International organizations cannot solve all the problems of the world, but they give hope to millions of people. They show that cooperation between nations and volunteers is possible, and that ordinary citizens can also support their actions by donating money, signing petitions or doing volunteer work.
