What is Conditional Type 3?
Conditional Type 3 is used to talk about hypothetical situations in the past — things that did not happen</.em>
Structure
The basic structure is:
If + past perfect, would have + past participle
Examples
- If I had studied harder, I would have passed the exam.
- She would have come to the party if she had known about it.
- If they had left earlier, they wouldn’t have missed the train.
Notes & Tips
- Use Conditional Type 3 only for unreal past situations.
- The
if clause always uses past perfect.
- The main clause uses
would have + past participle.
Practice Exercises
