Objective: Read a text about brain drain and answer comprehension and vocabulary questions. [web:169]

Text – Brain Drain: A Challenge for Developing Countries

Many young graduates today dream of leaving their country to study or work abroad. Doctors, engineers, teachers and researchers often look for better salaries, modern equipment and more opportunities for professional development. When a large number of skilled workers emigrate, this situation is called brain drain.

Brain drain has several causes. In many developing countries, unemployment is high and working conditions are poor. Hospitals and universities sometimes lack equipment, and promotion is often slow. In addition, corruption and lack of transparency make many young people feel frustrated. As a result, they decide to look for a better future in richer countries.

The effects of brain drain are serious. When doctors and nurses leave, the health system becomes weaker. When engineers and technicians emigrate, it is more difficult to develop industry and infrastructure. The country also loses money because the state has already invested in the education of these people.

However, there are possible solutions. Governments can improve salaries and working conditions, and create more opportunities for research and innovation. They can also encourage young people to return after their studies by offering them good jobs and helping them start projects. If countries invest seriously in their human resources, brain drain can become brain gain.

5. Writing – Problem–Solution Essay: Brain Drain

Objective: Write a problem–solution / opinion essay (140–180 words) about brain drain using cause, result and addition linkers. [web:170][web:173]

A. Model paragraph

Brain drain is a serious problem for many developing countries, including Morocco. Every year, a large number of doctors, engineers and other skilled workers leave the country to work abroad. One important cause is that salaries are often low and working conditions are not very attractive. Because of the lack of research centres and modern equipment, many young researchers also decide to emigrate. As a result, the country loses a lot of talent and experience, and some public services, such as health and education, become weaker. To reduce brain drain, the government should improve salaries and working conditions, and invest more in research and innovation. In addition, the private sector ought to create new jobs and offer good opportunities for young graduates so that they can build their future at home.
